DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES AND FISHERMEN WELFARE

          

The Union Territory of Pondicherry comprises of four maritime regions viz. Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam spread both on the East and West coast, with a coastline of 45 kms. and 675 sq.kms. of inshore waters enriched with fishery potential and exportable variety of shrimps. There is a potential area of 1347 Ha. of Inland waters and 800 Ha. of Brackish waters thus ensuring vast scope for the development of aquaculture.

 

             The Fisheries Department in the Union Territory of Pondicherry was established after the de facto merger with Indian Union. In general, the socio-economic conditions of the fisherfolk were in a miserable plight with meagre income which was not enough to improve their standard of living during premerger period.

 

              Thus in order to augment Marine and Inland fish production and to improve the socio-economic conditions of the poor fisherfolk various development schemes are implemented by this Department.

 

              There are 11 nos. of prominent fishermen hamlets in Yanam region with a total population of 4,943 fishermen.of which  1,514 nos.Of fishermen are actively engaged in fishing  activities in Yanam region.


             This Department is implementing the  following Welfare schemes for the Welfare of the fishermen in  Yanam region.
